There’s another pandemic going on in Nigeria, it is a silent killer and it is sweeping through our neighbourhoods — from the high borough of the elites to the slums of the most vulnerable and down trodden of our society and nobody, I mean nobody, not even government is showing concern.
Methamphetamine Hydrochloride, popularly known as ‘Mkpuru Mmiri’ in Igbo land or crystal meth, comes in clear crystal chunks or shiny blue-white rocks. Also called Ice or glass on the streets, it’s a popular party drug.Usually, users smoke crystal meth with a small glass pipe, but they may also swallow it, snort it, or inject it into a vein. People say they have a quick rush of euphoria shortly after using it. Sadly it is sweeping the nooks and crannies of our neighborhoods at an alarming rate.
And the targeted demography are young people from the ages 14 to 45, though it’s usage is irregardless of gender nor age but majority of it’s users are within that age range, the effect of the Ice when inhale is not something I can vividly describe, but I will try my best to do so.
Crystal meth (Ice) is a very dangerous and deadly drug, very addictive at that, sadly the variation they sell on our streets are the most substandard of the variables out there, yet one pack of it is still very expensive and damaging to our internal organs.
This pandemic that is a silent Killer is being over looked, and there’s no internal mechanism put in place to check it’s excess.
When the reality dawn on us, it would be like the opium crisis in Afghanistan, the heroin crisis of America, unlike the former which is Third World country, America could manage the pandemic to the barest minimum, I don’t think when things fall apart that Nigeria would have the capacity to curtail it.
